Oregon Senate Republicans shun the Capitol, demanding legislature refocus priorities
Senate Republicans said in a statement that they are staging a protest and invoking First Amendment rights. Like previous walkouts, their absence brings legislative business to a halt.

SALEM, Ore. Republicans in the Oregon Senate did not show up to the Capitol building for votes on Thursday, preventing the chamber from gaining a quorum to proceed on legislative business.
The Oregonian/OregonLive reported just after noon on Thursday that all 11 Senate Republicans were absent from the chamber, along with newly-Independent Senator Brian Boquist. Oregon s constitution requires that at least two-thirds of each chamber be present in order to conduct business.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) Republican lawmakers boycotted an Oregon Senate session Thursday morning, using a tactic they had employed in the past two years to assert their will by stopping work in the Democratic-led Legislature.
This time, it was over the state’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Oregon Senate Republicans carried out their first Capitol boycott of the legislative session on Thursday, in what has become an increasingly common tactic by the party that holds a minority of seats in both chambers of the Legislature.
Unlike in 2019 and 2020, when Senate and House Republicans walked out to kill proposals to cap greenhouse gas emissions and other Democratic proposals, Senate Republicans decided to no-show this time in order to protest Gov. Kate Brown’s COVID-19 restrictions. They outlined their reasoning in a letter to the governor.
