After pro-Trump rioters stormed Washington’s Capitol to disrupt an Electoral College vote count, several public officials and security experts in Michigan said they aren’t surprised by the mayhem.
Wednesday’s siege at the Capitol followed weeks of post-election threats to public officials in Michigan and other battleground states that left many concerned for their safety and wondering whether qualified people will want to serve in public official roles in the future.
“I’ve been getting battered and flooded with emails and phone calls and texts for months,” said Jonathan Kinloch, the Democratic vice chair of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, one of several local and state bodies targeted by President Trump and his supporters after Michigan certified the November election for Democrat Joe Biden.

The violent storming of the U.S. Capitol this week has renewed debate over the Michigan Capitol building’s security policies, and the state’s top Senate Republican is now expressing support for an open-carry ban in the building.
But those advocating for banning firearms in the building where state lawmakers do business say anything less than a complete ban isn’t enough to protect elected officials, staff and other visitors to the Michigan Capitol.
Unlike many state Capitol buildings around the country, visitors to the Michigan Capitol aren’t subject to metal detectors or a security checkpoint upon entry and are allowed to bring firearms into the building.

Current Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, and former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, a Republican, issued a joint statement on Wednesday condemning the violent occupation of the nation’s capitol building, where Congress was slated to affirm President-elect Joe Biden’s presidential win.
What started out as a group of protesters supporting President Donald Trump devolved into a violent group that stormed and occupied the U.S. Capitol. The Associated Press reports one woman who was shot in the building is dead, and dozens of protesters both inside and outside the building were seen fighting with police.
