TALLAHASSEE â Persuaded by testimony from the leaders in the Glades agriculture community that sugar burning is not harming their residents, the Florida House on Thursday sent to the governor a bill that gives the agriculture industry protection from lawsuits related to long-term health damage.
TALLAHASSEE – A massive expansion of gambling bringing sports betting to Florida for the first time and $250 million annually to the state treasury is part of a sweeping package advanced Friday by Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Seminole Tribe.
House Speaker Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, and Senate President Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby, set a special session of the Legislature for the week of May 17 to enact the new compact. The deal has been worked out behind the scenes for weeks between the governor, tribe and parimutuel operators.
The proposed package could break a deadlock spanning several years over crafting a new compact, with earlier efforts under U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, DeSantis’ predecessor, collapsing amid disputes that always pivoted around dollars, the games envisioned and whether Floridians really wanted to coexist with more gambling in the state.
