Sheriff alerts the public to kayak and paddle board thefts

Cheboygan Daily Tribune During the first two weeks of July, the Cheboygan County Sheriff s Department received several reports of paddleboards and kayaks being stolen from residences around the north side of Mullett Lake. Deputies with the sheriff s department are now investigating these thefts and the sheriff is warning other residents in that area to keep an eye on their outdoor gear. The thefts his department is currently investigating occurred in the area of McDonald Road. Sometime between July 5 and July 16, three residences on Mullett Lake have had items stolen from their docks, said Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont. Each had a paddleboard taken and one also had a kayak taken.

Sheriff s department offering free boater and ORV safety classes Cheboygan Daily Tribune The Cheboygan County Sheriff s Department will once again be offering boaters safety and ORV safety classes this year free of charge to any 12 years old and older who want to take the classes. The ORV safety class will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, in the Cheboygan County Commissioners meeting room, on the lower level of the Cheboygan County Building. The boaters safety class will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the next Saturday, May 22, in the same room. Anyone attending will be asked to enter the building through the entrance on the north end of the facility, nearest the commissioners meeting room.

Cheboygan County Jail investigating death of inmate Cheboygan Daily Tribune The Cheboygan County Sheriff s Department is currently investigating the death of an inmate in the Cheboygan County Jail that occurred the morning of March 12, in the dorm area of the jail. At 7:12 a.m., corrections officers in the Cheboygan County Jail called 911 for an ambulance to respond to the jail. A 39 year old male inmate had been found unresponsive in his cell. Corrections officers attempted life saving measures and those measures continued when EMS arrived, said Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont. Through coordination with the medical examiner, the male was pronounced dead.
