The Thrikkakara Assembly constituency is just a decade old and in the two elections since its formation, the electors have sent Congress party candidates to the Assembly. The recently-concluded elections to the local bodies had seen the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Congress party dominate. A largest segment of the constituency’s geographical area comprises urban areas, including information technology hubs in Kakkanad.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF), which came second in both the Assembly elections, is on the lookout for a suitable Independent candidate to contest the seat and pose a challenge to the incumbent as the constituency includes some parts of the Kochi Corporation where the UDF held sway in the recent elections to the local bodies.

Since 1957, when the first election to the State Assembly was held, the Left could send its representative from here only twice. First, it was literary critic M.K. Sanoo, who contested as Left Democratic Front-backed Independent in 1987. Eleven years later, journalist-lawyer Sebastian Paul spread cheer in the Left camp by winning the seat in 1998. On both the occasions, the dissidents in the Congress camp aided the Left front victory.
Federation demands steps to protect media freedom

The Kerala Newspapers Employees Federation (KNEF) has urged the Centre to take steps to protect media freedom.
The federation said media should be treated as voices of society. The KNEF State conference demanded that media persons who were arrested be released and cases against them withdrawn immediately.
Inaugurating the meet, Mayor M. Anilkumar said trade unions should stand together to protect workers’ rights. The meet was attended, among others, by CITU secretary K. Chandran Pillai. The valedictory function was inaugurated by Dr. Sebastian Paul.
The conference elected V.S. Johnson (Mathrubhumi), Tom Panakkal (Desabhimani), and M. Fairooz(Madhyamam) as president, general secretary, and treasurer respectively.

Two former top officials of the National Sports Club of India (NSCI)’s managing committee, along with three interior designers, have been booked for allegedly cheating the club of Rs 58 crore by inflating bills for contracts, clearing payments for incomplete works and cooking the books to conceal the fraud.
The Worli club, considered to be one of the richest in India, hosts one of the largest event venues in the country the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Indoor Stadium that can seat 5,000 people.
