JOHANNESBURG, May 11 (Xinhua) South Africa s governing party, the African National Congress (ANC) on Tuesday said some members facing corruption and serious criminal charges have stepped aside or been served with notices of suspension in accordance with the instruction of the party s National Executive Committee (NEC) resolution.
The ANC Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte made the remarks while briefing the media about the NEC meeting held over the weekend. The NEC noted that, in line with the decisions of the NEC meeting of March 26-29, a number of ANC members had stepped aside and others had been served with notices of suspension, including ANC secretary general (SG) Ace Magashule and NEC member Bongani Bongo, said Duarte.
Ramaphosa said if Magashule refused to do so, disciplinary steps will be taken.
There have also been revelations of serious threats against ANC staffers tasked with implementing the party s rules on stepping aside.
Suspended ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule has been ordered to apologise for the “letter of suspension” he wrote to President Cyril Ramaphosa last week, in response to his own suspension.
In his closing address to the three-day national executive committee (NEC) meeting held on a virtual platform, select snippets of which were leaked through audio-recordings, Ramaphosa said the NEC discussed Magashule’s letter, for which he, “. had no authority or mandate from any structure of the movement”.
The ANC sent Secretary-General Ace Magashule a suspension notice on Monday. On the same day, Magashule informed President Cyril Ramaphosa that he would also be suspended from the party. Magashule is on the ropes and desperate.
