Balfour Beatty increases rail worker pay offer after strike threat
Balfour Beatty has offered an increased pay rise to workers on its £1.5bn Network Rail contract, after they threatened to strike.
As previously reported, Balfour employees on the central rail system alliance – which covers development, design and delivery of track renewals and crossings, as well as associated infrastructure works across the London North West, London North East and East Midland routes – last week voted in favour of industrial action after not being given a pay rise in 2020.
Talks on their pay were repeatedly postponed during the pandemic.
Today the TSSA said the contractor has made an improved offer – of 2 per cent for 2020 to be backdated and paid in a lump sum. A further pay rise of 1.5 per cent with effect from 1 April 2021 has also been offered.
It also presented staff with a link to click on to receive more information on their bonus and to see a message from WMT s Managing Director Julian Edwards.
However, once staff clicked on the link, they received an email notifying them that the email was a test. A copy of this follow-up email was also posted on TSSA s website which said that the original message was meant to entice staff by using both the promise of thanks and financial reward to try and convince you to provide your details.
A spokesperson for WMT said that this important test was deliberately designed with the sort of language used by real cyber criminals but without the damaging consequences.
Balfour Beatty workers to vote on industrial action over pay
Thu, 6th May 2021 16:21
(Alliance News) - Workers employed on railway track renewals, maintenance and upgrades are being balloted on whether to take industrial action in a dispute over pay.
Members of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association at construction giant Balfour Beatty PLC will vote in the coming weeks on whether to launch a campaign of industrial action.
The union said workers were not offered any pay increase for 2020 and a rise of 2% April this year, even though the company was paying bonuses to senior managers and making a profit.
TSSA General Secretary Manuel Cortes said: Our brilliant members have shown huge commitment and sacrifice, working through this terrible pandemic, to deliver positive results for Balfour Beatty.
