CORNWALL – Around 70 questions were put to officials and consultants Thursday night as the City of Cornwall held on online open house on organics recycling.
Under provincial rules the city has to be able to divert half of all organic waste put into the garbage by 2025 through a green bin program. Those are things that can naturally break down like food scraps, coffee grinds, spoiled fruits and vegetables and paper products.

CORNWALL – A Cornwall city councillor says a worker who got into a heated argument and swore at a group of hockey players this week will be disciplined.
But in a social media post Friday night, Coun. Justin Towndale says “he will not be fired, nor should he be.”
Towndale says the 35-second video clip of the exchange, which included the employee dropping an f-bomb in a threat to melt the ice at the Reg Campbell Park rink, does not capture the entire exchange. Towndale believes the city worker was provoked by the crowd.
CORNWALL – Cornwall and Brockville are among the cheapest cities in Ontario when it comes to car insurance.
That’s according to a report by Canadian insurance and financial comparison website RatesDotCa, which compared premiums of Ontario cities based on a 35-year-old driver of a 2017 Honda Civic with a clean driving record.
The average Ontario premium in December 2020 was $1,616 a year – a 9.7 per cent increase since 2018.
For cities and towns with a population greater than 15,000, Cornwall’s average rate was $1,107 per year while Brockville and Kingston were a bit lower at $1,103 annually.
Other places with the cheapest insurance were Grimsby, Waterdown, Sudbury, Sarnia, St. Thomas, Petawawa, Russell, Napanee, Port Hope, Cobourg, Collingwood, Owen Sound and Stratford.

CORNWALL – The first 1,200 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine are expected to be delivered to the Eastern Ontario Health Unit next week, the region’s top doctor announced Monday.
Dr. Paul Roumeliotis says one tray of vials will be delivered from Ottawa and will be thawed, meaning the health unit will have five days to get the shots into people’s arms.
Roumeliotis says long-term care home staff, essential visitors and health care workers will be the first ones to be inoculated, following provincial health protocols.
There will be five sites set up in the EOHU area in order to give the initial shots as they can’t be transported, he explained. The logistics are expected to be ironed out tomorrow (Wednesday).

CORNWALL – A Quebec man will be spending another two years in prison for a stabbing outside a Cornwall bar in 2018.
Gyasi Burke, 38, of Chateauguay, Que. was sentenced Dec. 18 in a plea deal where he avoided a charge of attempted murder.
Instead, he pled guilty to aggravated assault, as well as charges of possession of a dangerous weapon and assault. Another five charges were withdrawn by the Crown, according to court records.
