One of Americaâs biggest national holidays is on approach. Independence Day is one of the largest celebratory days in American society, especially since the mid-twentieth century. While celebrations were smaller or even non-existent last year, several celebrations are coming back in 2021.
Most notably is the Independence Day celebration held by the city of Selma. However, Selma does things a little bit different. They have historically held their celebration on July 3, the day
before Independence Day.
According to Bob Allen of the Selma Chamber of Commerce, the reason for this unusual date of celebration is pretty unique. A Russian sports team came to Fresno for a match against one of the local teams during the summer of 1996 and they were eager to see a Fourth of July celebration.
What is the American Legion?
The American Legion is the largest wartime veteranâs service organization, with nearly 2 million members and more than 12,000 posts in communities throughout America. The America Legion was established by the act of Congress in 1919. The Legion was instrumental in getting the original GI Bill through Congress and the creation of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Today the American Legion is active throughout the United States, supporting current military personnel and veterans, sponsoring a variety of activities and events in local communities. The organization also pushes for the adoption of a constitutional amendment to prohibit desecration of the U.S. Flag.
An underfunded Selma Fire District founded the Selma Fire Department in August 1889. The City took charge in December 1895 with the Department reorganizing in January 1896.
