Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who died in service to their country.
The holiday was officially proclaimed in 1868 to honor Union and Confederate soldiers and was expanded after World War I to honor those who died in all wars.
Today, Memorial Day honors over 1 million men and women who have died in military service since the Civil War.
Park Rapids, Menahga and Laporte have scheduled Memorial Day programs.

The Park Rapids American Legion family conducts an in-person Memorial Day commemoration, beginning with a 9:10 a.m. Monday, May 31 wreath-laying ceremony on the County 15 bridge. The event will include a prayer, gun salute and “Taps.”

BISMARCK Miniature horses could soon be trotting into local stores and businesses with a bill the North Dakota Legislature is considering that would designate the compact creatures as service animals.
Current state law only defines a service animal as a dog trained to do work, perform tasks, or provide assistance for the benefit of an individual with a disability.
