Rajkot: A 23-year-old engineering student attempted suicide by jumping off the 4th floor of a building in city’s Soni Bazaar area during the early hours of Thursday.
According to police, Kaushal Khakhar jumped off the Keshav-Lila apartment building near Raiya Naka Tower in Soni Bazaar at about 3 am.
Khakhar is final year student of electronic and communication department at V V P Engineering College in Rajkot. He was first taken to Rajkot civil hospital and then referred to a private hospital. His condition is critical and he was unconscious till Thursday evening.
“Primary probe suggests that he was under depression since last eight months and was under medication,” said police. Khakhar’s father is a trader, they added.
The victim was identified as Gopal Rathod, a resident of Mafatnagar near Prabhudas lake in Bhavnagar.
According to a complaint filed by Gopal’s sister Ranjan Rathod with Gangajaiya police station, Vishal Gohel had killed her brother.
Police said that it was Gopal’s birthday on Sunday so he went to Soni Bazaar area where he used to live a few years ago, to celebrate his special day with old friends.
“He had also brought a birthday cake with him. He had called his friends Vishal, Ajay Vaghela and Prakash for cake cutting. But while cutting the cake cutting Gopal and Vishal entered into a verbal dual over some issue. An angry Vishal stabbed Gopal over ten times and fled the place,” police sources said.

Rajkot: Six persons were arrested in Veraval town on Wednesday for taking out a procession on the occasion of Ram Navami, in which devotees took part without following Covid guidelines.

“We booked them under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code, Epidemic Diseases Act and arrested them immediately,” police said.
Every year, devotees carry out procession from Soni Bazaar in the coastal town on occasion of Ram Navami but this year, public functions and processions have not been banned by the government.

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat reported a record 9,541 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the state s tally to 3,94,229, and 97 deaths, also a single-day fatality peak, while 3,783 people were discharged post recovery, an official said on Saturday.
The state s toll stands at 5,267, and the recovery count is 3,33,564, or 84.61 per cent of the caseload, leaving it with 55,398 active cases, including 304 on ventilator support, he said.
