City signs off on land sale that will house solar farm

Monroe’s city council has signed off on an agreement that will give a solar energy company the option to buy as much as 201 acres from a local infrastructure agency.  Monroe Solar LLC, a solar energy company affiliated with wind energy company Ventower, will enter into an agreement with the Port of Monroe that may potentially transfer two parcels of its land in an effort to construct a solar farm on the east side of the city.  Paul LaMarre, director of the port, said the local seaport has long sought to rejuvenate the area and the community.  The land in the deal has sat dormant for many years and served as an industrial landfill at one point, essentially making it a brownfield property, according to LaMarre. Such conditions made it hard for the port to endeavor in any serious redevelopment efforts, he added.
