Democrat Wins Special Election for New Mexico Congressional Seat
Democrats have retained a congressional seat representing part of New Mexico, filling a vacancy that arose when the officeholder left to join President Joe Biden’s administration.
Democrat nominee Melanie Ann Stansbury won the race for New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District, according to the final tally on June 1. Stansbury received 79,208 votes, over 32,000 more than Republican candidate Mark David Moores.
“It’s a good day to be a New Mexican because tonight New Mexico delivered for our people, delivered for our communities, and delivered for the United States of America,” Stansbury told a crowd during an election night celebration.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Yvette Herrell, New Mexico’s lone Republican lawmaker in Congress, would not tell the
Sun-News Wednesday whether she supported the ouster of Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., from her leadership position as the chair of the House Republican Conference.
What Herrell did say, in a statement, was that no Member of Congress is entitled to a leadership position.
A conference vote May 12 removed Cheney from her role as the third-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives. Votes were cast by voice in a closed-door meeting at the Capitol.
Cheney has been a frequent critic of former President Donald Trump and his provably false claims that the 2020 election was stolen claims which spurred the deadly U.S. Capitol insurrection in January. Cheney voted to impeach the former president following the insurrection.
