U.S. stocks mostly booked modest gains Wednesday, amid a historic House vote on impeaching President Donald Trump, one week before he is set to leave office.
Stocks struggled for direction Tuesday, flipping between modest gains and losses before finishing to the upside, allowing the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite to avoid their first back-to-back losses of 2021.
Stocks mostly closed marginally higher Wednesday as investors monitored efforts in Washington to impeach President Trump for the second time. Peter Andersen, founder of Andersen Capital, thinks political considerations are weighing on the market much more than many investors may realize.
Donald Trump Sets Wage Protections for U.S. Graduates

President Donald Trump’s Department of Labor has released an updated set of rules to protect the wages of American graduates from the damage done by CEOs’ use of H-1B visa workers.
“The U.S. Department of Labor is taking these steps to strengthen wage protections, address abuses in visa programs, and protect American workers from being undercut by cheaper foreign labor,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia said in a January 12 statement. He added:
These changes help ensure that these important foreign worker programs function as Congress intended, while securing American workers’ opportunities for stable, good-paying jobs.
