Philip Davidson, outgoing commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, agreed Monday to deepen security ties to counter China s growing maritime assertiveness in the East and South China seas. Reaffirming the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, Davidson was quoted by the Defense Ministry as saying in the meeting in Tokyo that the two countries alliance serves as the cornerstone of regional security.

This is the largest incursion yet reported by the ministry. The Chinese aircraft included four nuclear-capable H-6K bombers, 10 J-16 fighter jets, two J-10 fighter jets, two Y-8 anti-submarine warfare aircraft, one Y-8 reconnaissance aircraft, and a KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft. In response, Taiwan’s air force scrambled jets and deployed missiles to “monitor” the intruding planes. 

Indonesia, Japan ink agreement on defence cooperation

Anadolu Agency.  The agreement on the transfer of defence equipment and technology was signed on Tuesday, after the foreign and defence ministers of Indonesia and Japan met in Tokyo for the so-called two-plus-two talks, the second of its kind between the two countries since 2015. Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto said this agreement was a historical first in bilateral relations between Indonesia and Japan. He supported Japan to participate in efforts to develop Indonesia s defence industry. “We invite the Japanese side to take higher participation in the defence industry. Also we encourage joint training between our services – air, maritime and also land forces,” Subianto said in a joint press conference in Tokyo.
