Japan asks Taiwan to beef up semiconductor output amid supply crunch
Japan has asked Taiwan to beef up production of semiconductors amid a serious global shortage that has affected businesses such as automakers, the economy minister said Tuesday.
Strong demand for smartphones and 5G network equipment as well as robust recovery in auto sales from a slump due to the coronavirus pandemic has made chip supplies tight, forcing Honda Motor Co., Subaru Corp., Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. to cut or halt output this year. Taipei, Jan. 23 (CNA) The iconic Taipei 101 skyscraper from Saturday night began displaying LED messages to demonstrate the strong friendship between the people of Taiwan and Japan.
The messages, in Chinese, such as Japan-Taiwan friendship, Year of 2021, Peace and Blessings, Tokyo Olympics and Wish You Well. Go Go Go and We Will Work Hard Together rotated to flash on the skyscraper Saturday night.
Ten other messages, chosen from submissions by the public, will appear on the skyscraper Sunday night.
The message displays will be one of a series of activities leading up to the 10th anniversary of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that ravaged northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011, according to the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association (JTEA) Taipei Office, which organized the LED message event.

The government should refer to scientific evidence when deciding whether to lift a ban on food imports from five Japanese prefectures, Legislative Speaker You Si-kun said yesterday.
You made the remarks ahead of the inauguration ceremony for the Taiwan-Japan Parliament Members Friendship Association, which comprises 95 of the 113 lawmakers in the legislature.
There has been speculation that the government plans to lift the ban it placed on food imports from the Japanese prefectures of Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma and Chiba after the 2011 Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant disaster.
