Tue, 6 Apr 2021, 17:04 17:04 PM | BY: EARTHQUAKEMONITOR 4.2 quake 7 Apr 1:44 am (GMT +9) A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Nemuro, Nemuro-shi, Hokkaido, Japan, was reported only 13 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 50 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Wednesday 7 April 2021 at 1:44 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Japan s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7.

The tremor was recorded around noon on Monday 5 April 2021 at 1:23 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 8.3 km below the surface. The event was filed by New Zealand s Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
