Completely translucent but for a few specks of yellow-hued organs, a rare glass octopus made its debut on a live recording captured by scientists aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor in July 2021.
And after footage of the glass octopus went viral online, the exploration agency took to social media on July 10 to “clear up” facts about the deep-sea animal.
Spotted at a depth of over 2,100 feet at an underwater mountain known as a Seamount, relatively little is known about the species known scientifically as
Vitreledonella richardi. This is in large part due to its deep marine home most of what is known about
th annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl.
It was the first win for Dougherty Valley High School in the teamâs history, a news release said.
An interdisciplinary ocean science education program of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, the NOSB tests studentsâ knowledge of ocean science topics, including cross-disciplines of biology, chemistry, policy, physics, and geology.
This year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis, students competed in a modified, virtual competition season culminating in over a week of online competition, mentoring, and interactive âfield tripâ events as part of NOSB finals, the news release said.
Students on the championship team include Venkat Ranjan (captain), Harish Balasubramanian, Prayrak Bajaj, Daniel Zhu and Bryan Yan.

An almost completely transparent glass octopus was sighted in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in June by marine scientists on the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor.
The rarely observed cephalopod is relatively small, measuring up to just 18 inches long, including its tentacles, with a mantle length of 4.3 inches.
It was sighted on June 26 nearly half a mile deep around a reef complex in the Phoenix Islands Archipelago, which is located in the central Pacific Ocean.
