It was a tragedy that led Crystal s mother, Belinda Lane, on a years-long pursuit for her daughter s killers.
As police offered little help after the shooting, Belinda took matters into her own hands.
With the help of her niece, Jaimie McIntyre, Belinda set up a number of fake MySpace accounts in an attempt to chat to members of the 5150 gang, who she believed was responsible for the crime.
One fake profile, Angel , was a fake persona built using Crystal s photos and Jaimie s personality.
By using the Angel profile, Belinda and Jaimie were able to create online relationships with people they suspected of being involved with the murder, based on rumours Justin had heard about the 5150 gang.
Since Netflix released new true crime documentary film, Why Did You Kill Me, people have clearly been hooked on the story, as it hasn’t left the top 10 list. The film covers the murder case of Crystal Theobald, but Why Did You Kill Me actually missed out quite a few key facts about the story.
In 2006, 24-year-old Crystal was killed by gang members who shot at the car she was in. A local gang, the 5150, had heard that a rival gang had shot at their gang members earlier in the day and were out seeking revenge. They mistook the car Crystal was in with her boyfriend and brother as being driven by the rival gang and got out of their car and shot at hers. Crystal was shot in the head and died in hospital two days later.

In 2006, Crystal Theobald was killed by gang member Julio Heredia. It wasn’t until 10 years later that all the suspects involved would finally be brought to justice for their parts in the crime. New Netflix documentary, Why Did You Kill Me, looks at the case, and how Crystal’s mother, Belinda Lane, used MySpace to track down those responsible.
The Netflix documentary film looks at the case from the very beginning, when 24-year-old Crystal was killed by gang members who mistook the car she was in for one being driven by a rival gang. It’s described that the 5150 gang, which Heredia was a member of, had many in the neighbourhood scared and were known locally as being capable of murder.
The 2006 death of Crystal Theobald is now being explored in a new Netflix true crime documentary called Why Did You Kill Me? In the 83-minute film we see how Crystal’s mother, Belinda Lane, took to MySpace to hunt down those who she believed were responsible. 10 years after the murder, the final suspect was caught – William Sotelo.
Sotelo was 17 at the time of Crystal’s death, and a member of local Riverside gang, the 5150. William Sotelo was the owner of the white Ford Expedition which pulled up by the car Crystal was being driven in. She was in the car with her boyfriend and her brother, Justin Theobald. Crystal’s boyfriend was driving, and her mother, Belinda Lane, was in another car just ahead of them.
