Garden Help: A tale of two insects in Northeast Florida

Garden Help: A tale of two insects in Northeast Florida Larry Figart The last few weeks we have seen two insect outbreaks in the Northeast Florida area. The two insects are the Eastern lubber grasshopper and the tussock moth caterpillar. Both insects are abundant and noticeable this spring. Both insects cause damage by chewing on foliage. The thing that sets them apart is that one will continue to cause problems if not controlled in the landscape, and the other will go away on its own with no lasting damage. The tussock moth caterpillars have been reported throughout the area chewing on oak leaves and in some cases defoliating them. Tussock moth caterpillars have a red head, with two tufts of hair at the head, short tufts of hair along the body and one long tuft of hair near the rear.
