MADISON, WI (WSAU) â The Wisconsin Badger athletic community lost former menâs basketball coach John Powless on Thursday. Powless died at his home in Madison at the age of 88
He was Badger menâs basketball coach from 1969-1976 and compiled a record of 88-108 overall and 42-78 in the Big Ten. The best season was 1973-74 when the Badgers finished fourth in the conference.
After a stellar tennis career in college at Murray State, where he never lost a match, he continued the love for tennis after his basketball coaching career was over.
Powless opened the John Powless Tennis Center in Madiswon and also became one of the top senior tennis players in the world. He was inducted into the United States Tennis Hall of Fame in 2000. While coaching hoops at Wisconsin he was also the coach of the menâs tennis team for five years.
