This proves to us conclusively that good wine can be made in this country. It also proves another fact, and that is, Mr. B. knows how to make it. The Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way on the masthead.
May 1, 1905: With a dateline from Johnson City, the Nashville Banner reported news about area railroads. âPreparations are being made to resume work on the South & Western Railroad, which line was, ten years ago, partly built and was then known as the â3 Câsâ line, which was to extend from Chicago by Cincinnati to Charleston, S.C., crossing the Tennessee Valley and the Southern Railway at Johnson City, Tenn.â

April 29, 1886: The Comet brought sad news of several deaths. âThe angel of death was busy in our neighborhood last week. The first that died was Jane, wife of Samuel J. Foust; the next was Letetia, wife of James butler (sic); the third was Harriet, wife of R.W. Smalling, who departed this life at 5 oâclock, a.m., Saturday, April 24th, at her home, 2 miles east of this place. She was buried yesterday and her funeral was preached by Rev. Moses Eaton, and she was followed to her grave by her family and a large concourse of neighbors, relatives and friends.â
April 28, 1887: The Comet reported news of interest to local baseball fans. âThe Johnson city (sic) Reds were defeated last Friday at Bristol, on the Base Ball (sic) Knob, by a score of 40 to 8. It was a glorious victory for Bristol. About 8000 people witnessed the game and cheered enthusiastically as the good plays were made. The features of the game were many. Time of game 4 hours. Umpire R.E. Dixon.â
April 28, 1892: The Comet reported, âThe Johnson City Auxiliary to the American Bible Society held its first anniversary at the M.E. Church on Tuesday night, the 25th inst.â
âInst.â was a common abbreviation used that meant âin the same month.â
