The United States government will pay Pfizer Inc nearly $2bn for 100 million additional doses of its COVID-19 vaccine to bolster its supply as the country grapples with a nationwide spike in infections.
The company will deliver at least 70 million doses by June 30 and the rest no later than July 31, Pfizer said on Wednesday, bringing the total number of doses to 200 million for a total price of about $4bn.
The new deal comes amid a jump in US coronavirus infections that added more than a million new cases in just six days, according to a Reuters tally.
More than 322,000 Americans have died and there have been at least 18.2 million reported cases in the US, according to numbers compiled by Johns Hopkins University of Medicine.
The Graham County Health Department received its first shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine late Tuesday afternoon and roughly 170 health care providers were expected to get their first shot by the end of Wednesday.
âWeâre going to drop off some doses at Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center later today and weâre going to vaccinate some health care providers at doctorsâ offices today, too,â said Brian Douglas, county health care director.
Roughly 1,000 Graham County residents are currently battling the virus. Forty-six have died since March, with the most recent victim being a San Carlos Apache tribal member.
A total of 115 Graham County residents were diagnosed with COVID-19 Monday and Tuesday of this week and the majority of them live in a correctional facility, Douglas said.
