TBILISI, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) The ruling Georgian Dream party has nominated Defense Minister Irakli Garibashvili for the post of prime minister, after the resignation of Giorgi Gakharia earlier Thursday.
Irakli Kobakhidze, chairman of the Georgian Dream party, told a briefing that the political council (of the party) unanimously decided to name Irakli Garibashvili as a candidate for prime minister.
According to the Constitution of Georgia, the parliament will have two weeks to approve a new prime minister and cabinet.
If the parliament fails to approve the new government, the president will dismiss the parliament and snap parliamentary elections will be scheduled.

Tbilisi, Feb 18 : Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia announced his resignation on Thursday.
Gakharia said in a statement that he decided to step down because he could not reach an agreement with the ruling party over the arrest warrant issued against Nika Melia, a Parliament member and head of the United National Movement opposition party, the Xinhua news agency reported.
He believed it was wrong to arrest Melia when there is a danger of political escalation in the country. My absolutely firm position is that the enforcement of justice against one person, if it endangers the health of our citizens, if it creates a chance for political escalation, is unacceptable, Gakharia told a briefing.
