On April 29, Cory Lowe walked across the stage to celebrate earning his PhD in Criminology at the University of Florida, a little more than a decade after earning his Associate of Arts in Political Science at Georgia Highlands College (GHC).
Although Lowe initially received his PhD in 2020, commencement ceremonies were put on hold at the time. Participating in last month s graduation ceremony reminded Lowe of earning his first degree at GHC, which laid the groundwork for his academic and professional career.
Subscribe I dropped out of the first college I attended because of family and personal challenges, but when I had the opportunity to return to higher education, Georgia Highlands College provided an excellent educational experience and mentoring, Lowe said. This enabled me to restart my journey through higher education on a much better footing.
Georgia university regents restart search for new chancellor

ATLANTA (AP) Regents who oversee Georgia’s 26 public universities and colleges are restarting the search for a chancellor, saying they are still trying to find a permanent replacement for outgoing leader Steve Wrigley before he retires June 30.
Regents voted Tuesday after a nearly three-hour-long executive session to hire a new search firm after the previous search firm quit. The resolution by regent Neal Pruitt Jr. said the firm will consider current applicants and recruit new ones. If no permanent replacement is chosen by June 30, regents voted to appoint an interim leader for the 340,000-student system.

CARTERSVILLE, GA Cartersville s assistant city planner is moving to Rome to be its new assistant city manager.
Meredith Ulmer, who s been with the City of Cartersville since 2014, is expected to start her new job sometime in mid-June, according to a report in The Rome News-Tribune.
Ulmer previously had served Cartersville as city clerk and code enforcement officer, according to her LinkedIn profile. Before that, she was a professor at Georgia Highlands College in Cartersville and a case manager with the Georgia Department of Human Services in Cherokee County. Ulmer holds a master s degree in public administration from Kennesaw State University and bachelor s degree in political science from Brenau University.

Georgia Highlands College (GHC) student Matthew Perry, of Paulding County, has won this year s Leadership Award during the 49th annual GHC Honors Night, which was presented via livestream on April 22. The Leadership Award is sort of the pinnacle of the awards night – it s presented by the president, it s saved for the last presentation and the winner of the award is voted on by the Student Affairs Committee, Coordinator of Cocurricular and Transitions Programs for Student Life Clifton Puckett said. We look for students who exemplify positive leadership skills both on campus and in the community, while also maintaining high grades.
