How Does Case TV450B CTL Perform?

The 90-horsepower TV450B is the largest compact track loader offered by Case Construction Equipment and has sold well since its debut at World of Concrete last year.
Case cites its 8-inch multifunction LCD screen, rearview camera, and speed- and response-selectable electro-hydraulic (E-H) controls among the biggest reasons why.
Construction Equipment asked the independent experts at the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 in Wilmington, Illinois, to see if the company is right. Operator/instructor Brian Russell and third-year apprentice Bakarie Wilks, hand-picked out of a skid steer loader class for the assignment, were eager to test the vertical-lift machine on a rare sunlit January day.
This isn’t surprising. Compared with their nearest equipment kin – skid steers – CTLs are relative newcomers to the industry. So CTLs remain in a phase of development that includes rapid advances.
Two other factors propel CTL development. First is their broad, enthusiastic acceptance by customers. Maintaining market share requires OEMs to stay at the forefront of product development.
Second, the industry as a whole continues to make great gains in technology as advances in electronics, metallurgy and basic design bring peak performance to all types of equipment. This is as true for CTLs as for any other category.
The downside? In a world of relentless product development, it can be hard for customers to feel assured they’re getting the best from their equipment decisions. Several manufacturers offer skid steer and compact track loaders (CTLs) with over 3,500-lb. rated operating capacities (ROC) and operating weights exceeding 10,000-lbs. These units cross the boundary from utility to production machine, yet they offer a relatively compact package.
