Marc asks Martin for €800k for Sligo Airport

Deputy Marc MacSharry has pleaded with party leader and Taoiseach, Micheal Martin to help fund necessary safety works at Sligo Airport. In a letter to Mr Martin, Deputy MacSharry outlined how the airport in Strandhill was a base for the Irish Coast Guard and also served private flights and leisure flying. Under the instruction and on the insistence of Jim Gavin Assistant Director of the Irish Aviation Authority the airport is bound and set to undertake safety works by way of runway end safety areas together with the associated lighting alternations. The latter being the more costly parts of the required works as they require the reposition of lighting throughout the entire runway. The airport is in a position to fund much of the works from their own resources. However, in order to complete the works they must obtain €500,000 in capital expenditure support from Government.
