As the school year starts, 80% of the nation's school districts are scrambling to find school bus drivers, so they're trying to lure new hires with big payouts.
Immaculata to open STEM Discovery Lab next year
Immaculata School has kicked off a major capital project that will include a Science Technology Engineering and Math Discovery Lab.
Nearly $50,000 of the $100,000 required to receive a grant of up to $1.9 million from Shea Homes has already been raised by the school, according to Principal Margaret Beale.
The Discovery Lab will have a Maker Space Patio and is slated to open in 2022 for use by pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students in the region.
“The new STEM Discovery Lab will be a dedicated space for hands-on, inquiry-based learning,” Beale said, in a news release. “Students will work together to fine-tune their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As teachers guide their class through project-based learning, students will become masters of their education and take ownership of their learning.

Residents’ complaints about recreational vehicles and trailers hogging on-street parking spaces prompted Latrobe Council to look at amending its parking regulations to prohibit the practice.
At its May 10 meeting, council is expected to consider an ordinance change that would keep such vehicles from taking up street parking except for limited times in particular circumstances.
City Manager Michael Gray proposed prohibiting parking of RVs, boats and unattached trailers on city streets except in specific situations. He said homeowners would be allowed to park RVs on the street in front of their property for up to 72 hours, for loading and unloading purposes, or for winterizing the vehicle or preparing it for a trip, if they provide advance notice to the city.
KEYNOTES: COVID-19 food relief program to scale down
Rosemary Rimkus
Organized in March 2020, when COVID-19-related restrictions first appeared, the Food Relief program at First United Methodist Church continues to serve Hudson families. Hudson resident Stacey Hartford, who has spearheaded the yearlong program, said Food Relief began with two drive-up and delivery events weekly. As of April 16, food delivery will be curtailed to the third Friday of each month.
Hartford said the program was introduced for families who, under pandemic rules, could no longer go the store, and families whose income was reduced. She added that since many have received the COVID vaccine, and meals are available for children in school, the once-a-month delivery has been put in place.

Fellow USCCA Instructor Jim Kelley and his wife, Cathy, have dedicated themselves to offering a unique and effective couples-only license to carry class at Cape Gun Works in Hyannis, Massachusetts. He reached out to me recently to share that he and Cathy have held the couples’ class twice, with a third scheduled for this past Valentine’s weekend. I was excited to hear some of the lessons learned and successes gained.
The Couple Who Teaches Together…
“Cathy and I believed that some couples were not on the same page when it came to the idea of home defense,” Jim explained. “One partner might be pro-gun, and the other one hesitant (to say the least). We found out that when couples can come learn in a low-pressure (no live fire) atmosphere, they are very receptive to new information. We reduce the pressure immediately by saying our objective is to inform and have a fun class. [We tell them], ‘We understand that some
