Golden Kennel still under investigation after puppies found sick, dead

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is continuing an investigation at Golden Kennel, 9203 Weatherly Road, after a complaint was made to the department by someone who had dealings with the kennel. Golden Kennel owner Jian Karlos Ortiz Mendez bonded out of jail March 2, the same day several agencies raided the facility. His bond was set for $23,000 and Mendez was charged with 11 counts of aggravated animal cruelty and one misdemeanor count of animal neglect. Sgt. Matt Lillibridge said the owner and his girlfriend were the sole individuals on site at the time of the raid performed by officers of HCSO, Hernando, Pasco and Hillsborough County Animal Services, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the University of Florida.

BROOKSVILLE — A Brooksville kennel owner faces multiple charges of animal cruelty and neglect after law and animal enforcement officers from several agencies raided the kennel March 2 and found sick and dead puppies. Jian Karlos Ortiz Mendez, 34, owner of Golden Kennel LLC, 9203 Weatherly Road, was charged with 11 counts of aggravated animal cruelty and one misdemeanor count of animal neglect. He was being held on $23,000 bond. The misdemeanor count stemmed from a lack of water to kenneled dogs. Jian Karlos Ortiz Mendez The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said animal enforcement officer Mandy Rowe obtained a warrant as part of an ongoing investigation into sick puppies being housed at and sold from the kennel. Rowe learned that several puppies had been sold from the kennel and within days of being sold, some of the puppies died of canine parvovirus.

The Hernando County Sheriff s Office said their animal enforcement officer received information that several puppies had died of canine parvovirus, or parvo, within days of being sold from Golden Kennel. Parvo is a highly contagious virus that affects the gastrointestinal tract. It can affect all dogs, but unvaccinated dogs and puppies younger than four months are the most at risk.
