Antidepressants Not Clinically Useful for Back Pain

Antidepressants Not Clinically Useful for Back Pain While professional guidelines recommend antidepressants for back pain, researchers point out the lack of evidence for their usefulness. 26 Antidepressants are commonly prescribed for chronic pain, including back pain, sciatica, and osteoarthritis. Major pain guidelines recommend the use of serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), most commonly duloxetine. Yet, the evidence for antidepressants in pain is scant. A new study in the BMJ, led by Giovanni Ferreira at the University of Sydney, Australia, aimed to assess the evidence for these drugs in treating back pain and osteoarthritis. They found that the vast majority of the studies were at high risk of bias, and the outcomes (while statistically significant) did not meet a threshold for

Should Antidepressants Be Used For Chronic Pain?

Should Antidepressants Be Used For Chronic Pain? by Pooja Shete on  January 24, 2021 at 4:39 PM For the treatment of pain, antidepressants are commonly used worldwide. However, a new research has shown that antidepressants offer little to no help for people suffering chronic back pain and osteoarthritis and they can even cause harm. Millions of people globally are affected by back pain and knee osteoarthritis and they also are the leading cause of disability. The first-line pain medications are paracetamol and ibuprofen. However, when these medications fail to improve the symptoms, physicians prescribe antidepressants for pain. Even though many clinical practice guidelines recommend the use of antidepressants for long term (chronic) back pain and hip and knee osteoarthritis, the evidence supporting their use is not certain.

Antidepressants do not work for back pain, osteoarthritis: Study

Antidepressants do not work for back pain, osteoarthritis: Study ANI | Updated: Jan 23, 2021 23:04 IST Canberra [Australia], January 23 (ANI): Stimulant medications are generally inadequate for back and osteoarthritis pain, in spite of being broadly utilized for these conditions, suggests a study published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ). The findings, based on moderate certainty evidence, show that for people with pain >back pain the effects were too small to be worthwhile, but for osteoarthritis, a small beneficial effect cannot be ruled out. Most clinical practice guidelines recommend antidepressants for long term (chronic) pain >back pain and hip and knee osteoarthritis, yet evidence supporting their use is uncertain.
