The Animal Allies Pet Of The Week Is a 10 pound black and white domestic cat who is four years old. She ended up at the shelter because her former owners could no longer care for her. When she first arrived at the shelter Kimby was described as a sour patch kid first being sweet and then being a little sour by hissing at staff and volunteers.
She might initially hiss at you when approached but once you reach your hand out to you and she realizes you are a friend not a foe she will rub up against your hand for pets. Often times especially when an animal is first brought to the shelter they are very scared and not familiar with the staff and volunteers so they may exhibit these types of behaviors. Kimby would be better suited to live in a home without any other animals or kids so she can get all the attention.
It is that time again to highlight one of the amazing animals that you can see right now at the Lake Superior Zoo. The special guest today is Eugene the Axolotl pronounced ( ACK-suh-LAH-tuhl) which is a freshwater salamander that never fully goes through metamorphosis. The axolotl has fully developed lungs and feathery gills that allow it to breathe underwater.
Axolotl s are critically endangered due to draining and contamination of the lake complex Xochimilco (pronounced SO-chee-MILL-koh) near Mexico City which happens to be the only place you can find them and because they are a popular animal in pet trades which furthers them being endangered.
The Animal Allies Pet Of The Week is a super sweet boy named Chance. He is a pretty big dog at 64lbs, and is an American Staffordshire Terrier, who is about 3 years old. Chance found himself at Animal Allies when his former home could no longer care for him. He is initially pretty shy at first, but once he gets to know you he will be your best friend who loves to snuggle all night. Chance seems to be more comfortable with other dogs and an ideal home for him would be somewhere that already has a calm dog for him to become best friends with.
The Lake Superior Zoo welcomed a new member to the family last month with addition of an 8 year old Black Bear named Syke. He came from the MN Zoo where he lived with his siblings, Syke was orphaned as a cub and couldn t live on his own in the wild.
Many people in the Northland have run into black bears which are pretty common around here, but the very first one I ever saw in person was just a few month ago. I was driving up Woodland Avenue approaching the Hartley Nature Center when this big bouncing figure came flying out of the bushes and ran across the road at first I thought it was a dog but as I got closer I realized it was a black bear. I was shook, even though I was not in any danger to see this magnificent creature up close was crazy.
