Letter to the editor: Maine can’t keep waiting while CMP obstructs solar energy

I am mad as heck at Central Maine Power’s decades of willful negligence and obstruction of clean, renewable energy in Maine and you should be, too, especially if you think we should do our part to address climate change.
Now Maine’s largest utility wants to break its contracts, admitting it neglected to provide for the 2,000 megawatts of solar power preparing to come online in Maine, while the company worked overtime on its New England Clean Energy Connect power line so it could rake in $2.9 billion helping Massachusetts import 1,200 MW of electricity from Quebec by cutting Maine in two. CMP’s power line would also send $12.4 billion to Canada, instead of keeping jobs and money closer to home.

Over the past four years, the clean air and water that fuels Maine’s economy has been threatened by the Trump Administration’s relentless rollbacks of more than 100 environmental safeguards and their refusal to hold corporate polluters accountable. Meanwhile, Mainers continue to experience the impacts of climate change first-hand, whether it be rising seas, extreme weather, or the increase in tick-borne illnesses.
The release of Maine’s new Climate Action Plan in December 2020 laid out a positive path forward for tackling climate change and growing our economy by advancing climate solutions and clean energy technologies. One thing is for sure we can’t do it alone. For Maine and other states to be successful and deliver the greatest benefit to our residents, we’ll need help from Congress and the federal government.
