Lutheran gender justice advocates at CSW65 call on churches to step up action to empower women and girls
(LWI) - From ancient Greek mythology to 21st century politics, women s voices have been routinely silenced, suppressed and excluded from the public square. Churches and faith-based organizations today have a responsibility to challenge such persistent patriarchal attitudes and actions, becoming a driving force for change at both national and community level.

LWF delegation to bring local faith perspectives to UN’s Commission on the Status of Women
(LWI) - The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) will be taking part in the 65th session of the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) from 15 to 26 March 2021. A delegation of over seventy lay and ordained women and men from different parts of the globe will participate in the largely online event, giving a vital voice to all those working for equality and for an end to sexual and gender-based violence.

Webinar from refugee camp in Kenya, brings voices of young refugees
(LWI) - Young women in Kakuma refugee camp face many obstacles when aiming for equal opportunities as men and boys. In a webinar: “Emerging Women who Choose to Challenge”, young refugees and staff of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in Kakuma shared their daily struggles to realize their dreams and having careers of their choice.
“For women, to speak up is still a big challenge,” said Hilda Thuo, LWF Livelihoods Officer, Kakuma Area Program, and member of the LWF Kenya-Somalia gender action team. She underlined the importance of cultural dynamics in gender relations at Kakuma refugee camp. “Many communities still adhere to cultural practices which hinder women in attaining their goals.”
The COVID-19 pandemic can become a ‘kairos’ moment of opportunity for men to repent of the sin of patriarchy and create positive partnerships that empower women and men. Churches should be in the front line of this process, drawing on Scripture and other faith resources to advance gender equality.
