POLICE: 17-year-old charged with murder following apartment shooting

From The Tribune staff reports BIRMINGHAM – The Birmingham Police Department reports an arrest has been made in connection to the murder of 52-year-old Brian Keith Fleming, who was murdered on Jan. 3, 2021. The suspect has been identified as a 17-year-old juvenile from Birmingham, according to a press release from the department. Police say the suspect’s identity will be withheld due to the age of the defendant. Detectives presented information gathered on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for review, and murder warrant were obtained shortly thereafter. The juvenile defendant will be held in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

A Fort Drum soldier and a teenager have been charged with kidnapping and killing Hayden Harris, a soldier found dead days after he went missing from Fort Drum, prosecutors said Monday. Pvt. Jamaal Mellish, 23, of Brooklyn, and a 16-year-old boy whose name was not released, were charged Monday with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, second-degree possession of a weapon without a permit and second-degree possession of weapons for unlawful purposes. Mellish also was charged with suppressing evidence. Prosecutors say Mellish met Harris in Glen Park, about a 20-minute drive from their Fort Drum base, to exchange vehicles a earlier this month. They went to swap a Ford Mustang for Harris’ white 2017 Chevrolet Silverado, Sussex County First Assistant Prosecutor Gregory Mueller told the New Jersey Herald.

Authorities did not release any information on the teen, including hometown or relationship to the soldiers.  Authorities said a dispute may be behind the abduction of Harris in his truck by Mellish, who then allegedly drove more than 300 miles to his hometown of Brooklyn. The two soldiers and the juvenile then traveled to Ross Road in Byram, where investigators believe Harris was killed. Byram Township police found Harris body, nearly buried under snow, about 200 feet into the woods off the cul-de-sac. Firefighters called police to the scene after they found blood and several scattered items while on their annual Santa ride through the township.
