The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said a person being detained on Thursday morning suffered a medical emergency and later died. Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said the unnamed person was being detained at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center when he had a medical emergency around 6:20 a.m. Lopinto said the individual was taken to a hospital for treatment where he later died. “There is no immediate indication of a possible cause of death, but foul play is not suspected,” Lopinto said.

Police are searching for three suspects they believe are part of a larger group of people stealing cars and guns in Jefferson Parish and New Orleans. According to JPSO, James Elphage, 21, Maliek Hundley, 19, and Jermone Brown, 20, are all wanted for multiple counts of vehicle burglary. All three men are from New Orleans and are accused of breaking into multiple cars near the Orleans-Jefferson Parish line. According to police, the suspects are stealing cars and firearms to be used in other crimes.

Eric Parsa, 16, of Destrehan, lost consciousness and later died after being restrained by the deputies outside of a laser tag in Metairie on Jan. 19, 2020.

The lawsuit described Parsa as ‘severely autistic.’ It also alleged that responding police officers knew the teen was unarmed and obese and using excessive force. Parsa was reportedly handcuffed and restrained facedown for nine minutes. Officers allegedly did not place him in a prone position even after he calmed down.
