Rachel - Longtime Downton Fan
I’ll get straight to the point: these episodes will always be the most difficult episodes of
Downton Abbey for me to watch. My favorite character from the entire series is and has always been, Sybil (enough to don a replica of the harem pants and meet Allen Leech while wearing them). That said, let’s go over the least painful parts of these episodes.
The downstairs staff is all in love with the wrong people and Mrs. Patmore seems to be the only one who can call them out on it. Then again, Mrs. O’Brien doesn’t help matters, as she deliberately steers Jimmy towards Thomas, giving the latter false hope. Admittedly, this is the first episode I actually felt awful for Thomas (this becomes a running trend as the show goes on and an excellent example of character development for Downton’s underbutler!). Genius: Aretha
Not everyone was delighted when a Brit was cast as American icon Aretha Franklin, but Cynthia Erivo, from South London, is terrific as the legendary singer and musician, as is Courtney B. Vance, who plays her father, a boozy, womaniser despite being a preacher.
This eight-part drama traces Franklin’s stellar career and begins with her in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in 1967, recording her first album for Atlantic Records after six unsuccessful years with Columbia.
