New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal filed a lawsuit on Tuesday on behalf of the state against the Township of Jackson claiming that its zoning laws are discriminatory and have prevented Orthodox Jews from freely practicing their religion.
The Ocean County town is home to some 60,000 people and is adjacent to Lakewood, the stateâs fastest-growing municipality and home to a significantly large Orthodox Jewish community. As the population there has grown, housing has become more dense and expensive, leading some Orthodox Jews to move to neighboring towns, including Jackson.

A 52-year-old Middlesex County man was arrested Tuesday and accused of sending a harassing, hateful and racist email to the lone Black councilwoman in his town, authorities said.
Adam Valvo, of Old Bridge, is charged with two counts of fourth-degree bias intimidation and one count of harassment, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Acting Chief Joseph P. Mandola, Jr. of the township police department.
Shortly after the incident, Brown told NJ Advance Media the email was laden with the N-word and included racist comments about Black people and those who live in Newark, Trenton and Paterson.

WILDWOOD, N.J. - A Wildwood, New Jersey bar will be closed for the summer after repeated violations of the state s COVID-19 health and safety orders prompted officials to suspend their liquor license.
Under a negotiated settlement with state alcohol regulators, Shamrock Beef & Ale will have its liquor license suspended from May 1 through Sept. 30.
New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced the settlement this week, adding that two other venues operating under the same license at that location, Castaway’s Pirate Bar and Club Amnesia, must also cease serving alcohol during the suspension.
