Toward a Brazil–U S Binational Institution

The Issue Brazil and the United States enjoy a strong relationship which includes cooperation in various areas, including trade, security, education, science and technology, and more. However, the current level of exchange in these areas does not accurately reflect the strategic importance of the relationship for the two largest democracies and economies in the Western Hemisphere. The creation of a binational organization would advance and institutionalize the Brazil–U.S. relationship by promoting innovative ways of thinking and inviting a new, collaborative, and transformational approach to partnership development. Introduction Brazil and the United States have enjoyed a strong, longstanding diplomatic relationship that presently includes cooperation on issues such as trade and investment, security, defense technology, space exploration, 5G infrastructure, the environment, and education. However, the current level of exchange in these areas does not accurately reflect the strat

Twitter faces a rocky path under Turkey s new social media law

ANKARA: Turkey’s advertising ban for social media platforms with more than 1 million daily users that have failed to establish a local representative office in the country came into force on Tuesday. As of Jan. 19, nobody will be allowed to advertise on Twitter, its live-streaming app Periscope and image-sharing app Pinterest, leading to a substantial loss of revenue for these platforms. Their bandwidth will also be reduced by half in April and by 90 percent in May, leading ultimately to a total blocking of access. On Monday, Facebook announced that it would appoint a local representative in Turkey, in compliance with the country s draconian social media law that has been criticized as a powerful instrument of state censorship of online content.

Germany s Ruling Christian Democrats Pick Merkel Loyalist as New Leader

January 18, 2021 08:13 Germany s ruling Christian Democrats (CDU) Saturday chose Armin Laschet, premier of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany s most populous state, as their new leader. The pick suggests the party favors continuing with German Chancellor Angela Merkel s middle-of-the-road policies when she steps down in September after 16 years in office. Laschet s win puts him in position to succeed Merkel when the CDU and its sister party, the Christian Social Union, decide in March who should become the center-right bloc s candidate for chancellor in national elections. The CDU has led Germany s federal government for 52 of the past 72 years. Laschet, 59, now replaces as chair of the party Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the defense secretary whom Merkel had been grooming as her successor. Kramp-Karrenbauer largely failed to assert her authority over the party and announced her resignation in February after blaming Merkel for not being supportive enough.
