Gamescom today announced that the 2021 event would not have any physical component. Instead the event would consist of a series of digital events and content.
Gamescom organisers, the German industry body Game and the venue Koelnmesse, had hoped to hold a hybrid event in late August. However the prevailing uncertainty of the continued pandemic has made that impossible.
A statement admitted that it had simply come too early for the industry.
Oliver Frese, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse said: “Together with game – The German Games Industry Association, we have put all our energy into making gamescom 2021 in a hybrid format possible for fans and industry alike. However, even though the hybrid concept was very well received by the partners, we had to recognize that gamescom still comes too early for many companies in the industry due to the required planning reliability.

Just like last year, and the situation with Covid-19, Gamescom 2021 is going all digital once again. Although plans of having a digital/in-person hybrid event were in talks, organisers have decided to abandon the idea.
From a press release by the event organisers Koelnmesse and the German Games Industry Association (GAME), they’ve announced that this year’s Gamescom is “to be held exclusively online and free of charge for all fans.”

The decision for an all-digital event was made after extensive discussions with partners and exhibitors considering that too many companies are unable to participate in physical events due to the global crisis.

The organisers of the annual Gamescom event has this week announced that Gamescom 2021 will once again be an all digital event. Gamescom is currently the largest event for computer and video games and Europe’s most “comprehensive business platform for the games industry” and will once again be free of charge for all and will be a completely digital event for 2021. The decision has been made by the German Games Industry Association and Koelnmesse taking into account the current situation, during which too many companies are unable to participate in physical events this year, due to the ongoing worldwide pandemic.
E3 2021 adds Sega, Square Enix, Bandai Namco, and more publishers
All aboard the hype train!
There is not long to wait before E3 2021, with just over a month to go. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has confirmed today that more publishers have signed onto E3 2021, including Square Enix, Sega, Bandai Namco, XSEED Games / Marvelous, Gearbox Entertainment, Freedom Games, Devious Eye Entertainment, Turtle Beach, Verizon, and Binge.com. Other major publishers committed to the event last month (though Konami subsequently dropped out), including Nintendo, so fans can probably expect some kind of Nintendo Direct presentation next month.
E3 2021 will be an online-only event, just like with most gaming showcases. It is scheduled to take place June 12 – 15 and will feature the usual press conference-like format. A few notable publishers have yet to sign on to E3 2021, such as PlayStation, which abandoned the event in 2019 before the pandemic. There’s still a chance that more
