The No. 15 ranked Mid-Prairie boys soccer team saw their season come to a close Wednesday at Memorial Field as the No. 5 West Liberty Comets earned a bid to the state tournament with a 3-0 win. West Liberty scored just two minutes into the contest to grab the early advantage. Both teams settled in after that, with the Comets controlling possession but playing even for the rest of the half on the scoreboard. Out of the break, things continued in the same fashion until the midway point of the second stanza. Mid-Prairie changed up formations, trying to spark something on offense and gave up a pair of goals in less than two minutes to fall behind 3-0 and that was more than enough for the Comets. After the match, Mid-Prairie head coach Pat Cady talked about the season and his seniors. “I told them as long as we left everything on the field tonight when we left and just got beat by a better team then I would be proud of them. The Mid-Prairie boys soccer team finishes the regular season Monday when they host Keokuk in Wellman on Senior Night. Mid-Prairie stands at 8-4 on the season, they were beaten at West Branch Friday 2-1. On the year, the Hawks are led by Owen Trimpe with 14 goals, Ethan Trimpe with eight assists and Justice Jones with 23 saves and a 76.7% save percentage.
Keokuk is winless on the season at 0-12. The Chiefs were beaten by Fairfield last Tuesday 15-0 in their last match. For the year, the Chiefs have been outscored 99-10. Keokuk is led by MJ Davis with five goals, London Wray with two assists and in goal, Erich Profeta has 101 saves and a 58.7% save percentage. Mid-Prairie has won the last two meetings in the series including a 3-2 victory in 2019. The Golden Hawks will honor seven seniors in tonight’s festivities including Tobin Miller, Zeus Fugate, Aaron Slaubaugh, Jake Swartzendruber, Ethan Trimpe, Michael Kelly, and Yassin Ahmed. The No. 5 ranked Mid-Prairie boys soccer team stopped a two match losing streak Monday with an 8-0 shut out of Highland in Wellman. The Golden Hawks controlled the match from the opening kick, with Tobin Miller finding the back of the net on a Jake Swartzendruber assist nine minutes in. Jack Pennington would post back to back goals, unassisted in the 14th minute and on a Gunnar Gingerich assist in the 15th minute to make it 3-0. Swartzendruber then scored one of his own when he linked up with Tucker Miller in the 26th minute and Pennington added goals three and four in the 30th and 32nd minutes on Owen Trimpe assists to run the Mid-Prairie lead to 6-0 at half. The second half saw two more Golden Hawk goals, with Gunnar Gingerich finishing an Owen Trimpe assist in the 43rd minute and Pennington scoring his fifth unassisted in the 77th minute.
