Ganga Stone died on June 2nd

S OMETIME IN 1985, when she was working as a volunteer at a hospice on the Lower East Side, Ganga Stone took a bag of groceries to an actor who was dying of AIDS. She parked her bicycle and walked up to his apartment, not without trepidation. AIDS was then ravaging the gay community in New York, and almost nothing was known about it. Its victims were stigmatised and isolated. When the man, Richard Sale, opened the door to her, he was stick-thin and covered with lesions. She had never seen anyone look that bad. And when she handed over the groceries, he deliberately dropped them on the floor. He was far too weak to cope with cooking them. One packet of bread-mix so frustrated him that he tossed it across the room.

Mary Popovich, enjoyed treating guests

December 28, 2020 Mary Popovich, 94, of Lewes, formerly of Wilmington and Landenberg, Pa., passed away Friday, Dec. 25, 2020, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, David and Cynthia Popovich. She was born Nov. 12, 1926, into a large, extended Irish family in Wilmington to Timothy and Jenny Toomey.  Mary will be remembered by family, friends and neighbors as an unceasing baker of cookies, cakes and pies. All who stopped in to see her were offered a cup of coffee and one of these treats to eat and/or take home. In addition, she was born with a green thumb, and enjoyed hours and hours planning, planting and nurturing the flora in her home and yard. She was never as happy as when she was baking in her kitchen or puttering around in her outdoor gardens.
