This week, the Duluth City Council unanimously approved adding a third deputy police chief tasked with, among other things, a focus on police accountability.
But Jamey Sharp, the founder of what he calls the grassroots data group LEANDuluth, says whether it s 50 new deputy chiefs or one new chief, it doesn t matter if they re not willing to look outside the police department itself for answers.
He s particularly concerned about use of force incidents from 2019, which showed police employing force with Black Duluthians 19 times more often than with white residents, and ten times more often with Native Americans.

Black-owned businesses saw a surge in interest beginning at the height of the 2020 summer protests in response to the death of George Floyd. Searches for Black owned businesses increased over 7,000% between May 25 to July 10, according to a consumer report released by Yelp.

We all are aware of the brutal death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis Police last year. However, some may be less aware of the apparently racially disproportionate policing practices here in the Northland.
In January, the News reported on efforts to alleviate previous delays in drug orders and other difficulties at Benzer Pharmacy, formerly Town Drug. A regional manager for the national pharmacy chain pointed to issues with the company’s wholesaler related to new acquisitions of pharmacy locations in Ohio. The local pharmacy has since regained its footing, and in November, the downtown store a pharmacy location for about 90 years changed its name to Yellow Springs Pharmacy.
Clem & Thyme Nutrition and Wellness expanded its East Enon Road practice, the News reported in February. Founded by Leslie Edmunds, the practice offers nutrition therapy, dietary consulting, cooking classes and more.
