The police have re-opened a dormant investigation into a 2014 murder, believed to be a gangland vendetta, on the back of cooperation from self-confessed hitman Vincent Muscat.
Sources say investigators have identified a main suspect in the murder of Jonathan Pace, 31, of Żejtun, known as the operator of Tyson Butcher.
The breakthrough is understood to have come after Muscat, known as il-Koħħu, started cooperating with the police on a string of cold cases spanning several years.
The sources said the killing is being treated as a revenge crime for an attempted murder on Muscat a few months earlier.
Pace had been hit by five of 15 to 20 shots fired at him from an SUV. He was standing on the balcony of his house on a quiet residential street in Fgura when someone shot him with a fully-automatic assault rifle.

There can be no justice for Caruana Galizia if the alleged involvement of the PM’s former chief of staff Keith Schembri, through his assistance to one or other players in this plot, is not thoroughly investigated

The arrest this week of three more men suspected of involvement in the Caruana Galizia assassination, as well as the 2015 Carmel Chircop murder, was undeniably a major breakthrough for police.
It also stemmed from the decision of one of the original suspects – Vincent Muscat – to accept a plea bargain. This has, in fact, been the pattern of the investigation: Muscat had already pointed out Melvin Theuma, the assassination middleman, to investigators; and Theuma in turn accepted a Presidential pardon to tell police all he knew about the assassination.

Early on Monday morning, a cabinet meeting was held at the office of the prime minister.
During the confidential meeting, ministers were given details of a deal that had been hashed out between a lawyer representing one of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s alleged assassins and the authorities.
According to advice from the State Prosecutor’s office and the police chief, ministers were told Vincent Muscat, known as il-Koħħu, was to plead guilty to his role in the 2017 murder of the journalist. He would provide police with evidence on other players in the crime in exchange for a reduced sentence.

At the top of the pyramid sits business tycoon Yorgen Fenech, who stands charged with having ordered the killing of the prominent journalist in October 2017.
Fenech, one of the richest men on the island, is a principal investor in the Electrogas power station project and was exposed as the hidden owner of secret offshore company 17 Black, a suspected vehicle for kickbacks to senior politicians.
Caruana Galizia was probing Fenech’s business dealings at the time of her death; however, it is still not excluded that there may have been more than one mastermind behind the assassination.

Two men have been charged in Malta with supplying the car bomb that killed investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017.
Robert Agius and Jamie Vella appeared in court on Wednesday and are accused of complicity in the assassination - charges they deny.
Another suspect, Vincent Muscat, was jailed for 15 years on Tuesday when he admitted involvement in the murder.
Caruana Galizia uncovered networks of corruption in Malta and abroad.
Known as a "one-woman WikiLeaks", she was killed aged 53 by a car bomb close to her home in October 2017. Many suspect the killing was ordered by top establishment figures.
