Autumn Bradley, from Guisborough, has a condition called pectus excavatum, which causes her breastbone to grow inwards. The 14-year-old was a keen athlete – running at county level – but her sternum is now just 25mm from her spine, effectively squashing her heart and lungs and resulting in breathing problems and constant pain. Her case was raised in Parliament by her MP, Simon Clarke, last year and as a result, the NHS policy of the treatment of the condition is now under review. A decision made in 2019 means the treatment is currently not available in England, though it is in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, regardless of how serious the symptoms, as it is considered cosmetic.
At least 246 frontline health and care workers have been identified after dying with coronavirus.
Through tributes from loved ones and confirmation through sources such as local NHS trusts and other authorities, the PA news agency has confirmed the names of health and social care workers who have died after contracting Covid-19 since March 11 2020.
This chronological list contains people who were working in roles shortly before their deaths where they were likely to come into contact with patients.
The figure is likely to be lower than the true number of workers who have died, as the names of some victims will not yet be in the public domain.
