Farm-crop season in 2021 has been a tale of two cities, according to Eric Anderson, field crops educator at Michigan State University Extension of St. Joseph County.
Until mid-June, there was drought, he said, and Michigan stood out among the Great Lakes states in that regard.
“Storm fronts would come through and they would miss us,” Anderson said. “We had gotten up to D2 drought.”
D2 is the designation for severe level, according to U.S. Drought Monitor. The scale ranges from D0 (abnormally dry) to D4 ( exceptional ).
According to Anderson, this region had been dry since fall 2020. Less snow fell last winter and there was an early warm-up heading into spring.
