Demons in First Heading into Day Two, Bruner One Shot Off Lead

Taking control in day one of the Iowa High School Girls State Golf meet in Adel is exactly what Washington did on Tuesday, as they sit a top of the standings halfway through the Class 3A competition. The Demons shot a 52 above par 340 through 18 holes at River Valley Golf Course and that score was 17 strokes better than the rest of the competition. Gilbert is in second with a 357 and West Delaware third with 383. Washington is seeking the program’s sixth state title including fourth in the last seven years. Kiki Bruner is right in the mix for the individual crown with a +5 round of 77 that puts her just one shot off the lead. Eden Lorhbach of Gilbert leads the way with a 76. Anna Nacos put together a top five round, as her score of 80 is currently in fourth. Other Demon results included Makenna Conrad 90, Kaylin Long 93, Josie Tanner 96, and Alecia Goff 110.

Trio of Area Teams Square Off at Cedarcrest

It’s an all-KCII area affair in Columbus Junction tonight when the Wildcats host a boys and girls golf triangular against the Washington Demons and Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks. Mid-Prairie is the only one of the three teams to compete already this season, taking on Iowa City Regina in River Valley Conference action Monday. The Golden Hawk girls scored a win over Regina at Pleasant Valley 252-271 led by meet medalist Elliot Debler and her score of 60. The Mid-Prairie boys were beaten by the Regals 222-228 in Kalona. The Golden Hawk boys were led by Warren Scarff and his meet medalist runner-up round of 52.

Nacos Leads Three Demon Girls on All SEC

The Southeast Conference recently released its girls basketball all conference teams and three Washington players were recognized. Anna Nacos was the headliner being named to the second team. The senior guard led the Demons with 9.3 points, 2.2 steals, and 1.5 assists a game. Her best game was in Washington’s 38-37 playoff win over Oskaloosa where Nacos tallied 18 points. Alex Murphy and Josie Tanner were named honorable mention. Murphy really came along in the second half of her sophomore season to lead the team with six rebounds a night. She made 39% of her shots to average five points. Tanner led the team with 29 made three-point shots and chipped in with 4.6 points a contest. Four players were also named to the academic all conference list in Nacos, Tanner, Ava Turner, and Greta Rothe.
