Aster Road in Adelanto set for two-week closure for much needed improvement project

A stretch of Aster Road in Adelanto will close Monday for approximately two weeks for a road improvement project city officials say will, in part, bring the residential roadway up to Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
Located in the Adelanto s southern section, Aster Road, which runs north to south, will be closed between Thorndale Street and Mojave Drive, a distance of about a mile. The project will repave Aster Road, add a bike lane and update the sidewalk.
The segment of Aster Road designated for revamp functions as a collector street, particularly for traffic to Adelanto High School and Columbia Middle School, city officials said in a staff report.
King of the Hammers crawls on in Johnson Valley despite COVID-19 pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic will not thwart the annual running of the King of the Hammers, one of the largest off-road racing events in the country.
The King of the Hammers 2021 a weeklong frenzy of desert racing and rock crawling in Johnson Valley begins Jan. 28 and continues through Feb. 6.
Despite a total of 251,213 total COVID-19 cases in San Bernardino County as of Sunday, racers and fans are scheduled to converge at Means Dry Lake to enter Hammertown a pop-up city erected as part of the event.
Fire in Cajon Pass grows to 50 acres Sunday afternoon

Firefighters got a quick handle on a blaze in the Cajon Pass on Sunday afternoon that spread to about 50 acres.
Firefighters responded to the blaze, dubbed the Blue Fire, just off Old Cajon Boulevard just before 3 p.m., according to the San Bernardino National Forest.
Information was scarce Sunday evening, but fire officials said the forward rate of spread had been stopped and it was 95% containment.
Firefighters arrived on scene and estimated it to be about five to 10 acres and moving at a “moderate rate of spread.”
“Firefighters are making good progress on the fire, which is now moving with a slow rate of spread and is approximately 50 acres,” the San Bernardino National Forest tweeted at 3:40 p.m.
