Selfless shots: For Cayuga County-area residents, COVID-19 vaccine protects family

AURELIUS — Bridget Kennedy wasn t thinking of herself when she received the second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday.  For Kennedy, an Auburn resident who is a teacher with the Port Byron Central School District, getting vaccinated was more about the safety of those at home.  I got it to protect my kids, she said. Her children are too young to get the vaccine.  The Citizen interviewed Kennedy and others at a clinic held by the Cayuga County Health Department at Fingerlakes Mall in Aurelius. Hundreds of residents, many of whom received their first dose of the vaccine at Port Byron, were there to get their second dose. (The Moderna vaccine, like the Pfizer vaccine, requires two doses. Johnson & Johnson has a single-dose vaccination.)

Staff shortage forces J-E elementary school to go remote for 2 days Updated Dec 10, 2020; Elbridge, N.Y. A shortage of staff members has forced the Jordan-Elbridge Elementary School to switch to remote learning. The school will move to remote learning today and Friday. The district could not find enough staff members to teach students in person, said James Froio, superintendent of the Jordan-Elbridge Central School District. The elementary school is expected to return to in-person learning on Monday, Froio said. The district’s middle school and high school are continuing in-person classes. There have been 16 confirmed coronavirus cases among J-E students and staff since Sept. 1, according to state data on Covid-19 cases in schools. Four of the cases were reported at Elbridge Elementary within the last seven days.
