Jury selected for trial of STEM School shooting suspect DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) The jury has been selected for one of the suspects involved in the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting. Opening statements began immediately. The youngest suspect, who was 16 at the time, pled guilty in February 2020 to 15 counts, including first-degree murder in the death of Kendrick Castillo. Alec McKinney was sentenced July 24, 2020, to life in prison plus 38 years. Thursday, the Office of the District Attorney, 18th Judicial District, confirmed a jury was selected for Devon Erickson s murder trial, he was 18 at the time of the shooting. The jury consists of 12 people with four alternates.

Data from Douglas County’s district and municipal courts shows some racial disparities in the setting of bond amounts, but what causes them is not yet clear, a county official said Tuesday. During a Criminal Justice Coordinating Council meeting, Data Analyst Matt Cravens showed several data sets related to cash and cash or surety bond amounts for racial groups between 2016 and 2020, including adjusted data showing Hispanic inmates receiving higher bond amounts in municipal court cases compared with other groups. Cravens said the adjusted data accounted for controlled variables, such as age, gender and number of alleged offenses, among others.

Sentencing delayed in trailhead vehicle burglaries

Record Courier Sentencing was delayed for two people who admitted burglarizing a half-dozen vehicles last May at trailheads in Lake Tahoe and Jacks Valley. Harvis Berry, 35, appeared remotely in Douglas County District Court on Tuesday from a hospital bed where he was being treated. District Judge Tod Young said it was clear that Berry’s sentencing hearing had to be delayed and set a May 18 hearing. Berry is facing charges of principal to burglary and fraudulent use of a credit card. Carolyn Maxine Brinkman, 33, was also in Douglas County District Court on Tuesday, but her sentencing was delayed until May 25.

Kendrick Castillo was shot and killed on May 7, 2019 after charging at two students who turned guns on an English class. Eight other students were wounded. According to the 10-page lawsuit filed in Douglas County District Court, the school failed to “properly respond to the ever-present and foreseeable risk of a school shooting as well as the multiple specific warnings of a school shooting at STEM that preceded the death of Kendrick.”
