Incompetent criminal jailed for attempted robbery

A judge has said that a firearm used during a failed robbery was likely an imitation given the “sheer incompetence” displayed by the raider.
Dubliner Derek Ennis (41) pulled his hood down when asked by an employee of a bookmakers just before an attempted robbery in which he failed to steal any money and was “easily identifiable” on CCTV footage as a result.
Ennis of Strandmill Road, Portmarnock pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to attempted robbery at Paddy Power, Seafort Avenue, Sandymount, south Dublin on February 26, 2020.
He has six previous convictions for robbery. His other previous convictions include theft, assault causing harm, endangerment, production of an article in the course of a dispute and possession of drugs for sale or supply.
Man jailed for bundling a pensioner into the boot of his car

A 21-year-old man who bundled a pensioner into the boot of his car while she was out walking early on a winter’s morning has been jailed for six years.
On Tuesday the court heard through the 70-year-old woman’s victim statement that she looked into Martin Gallagher’s face as “I lay in that boot. I was afraid for my life.”
She was walking along a Dublin Street around 7.30am on a January morning when Gallagher grabbed her from behind and threw her into the open boot of his parked vehicle.

A robber who beat a man on the street and was apprehended seconds later by an off-duty garda has been jailed for four years.
Dubliner Kevin Murphy (30) had attacked a man in the city centre, punching and kicking the victim while he was on the ground, and was running away from the scene when he was apprehended by an off-duty garda who happened to be passing by.
Murphy of Mount Olive, Park, Kilbarrack pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to robbery at Aston Place, Temple Bar, Dublin city centre, on June 29, 2020.
His previous convictions include possession of drugs for sale or supply, possession of stolen property and violent behaviour in a garda station.
Man given suspended sentence for punching ex-partner in face

A man who attacked his then partner after returning home from a wedding has received a fully suspended sentence.
Graham Shields (34) “lunged” at his then partner and punched her in the face causing “significant injury”. The assault marked the end of their relationship and had “an extremely profound psychological effect on the injured party”.
Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Shields, who has been diagnosed with an anti-social personality disorder, is now on “cordial terms” with his ex-partner and contributes to the financial well-being of their son.
